1921 Hudson Building - Cushing, OK

With a last name of 'Hudson' I could not pass up this building. It is a little rough but it is a large building taking up street to alley occupation of its lots. Just what this building housed and who built it are unknown at present. It is located just off the main downtown streets, in an areas that would have once been THE main entry into the downtown. I can close my eyes and see it restored with heart and creativity to become apartments, office space, etc. Searching for other mentions of 'Hudson", however, bring up the Hudson Oil Company begun by a woman in 1933 in Missouri. From this start emerged The Hudson Oil Refinery. This refinery was, according to some sources, the last to withdraw from Cushing after the first initial bloom of the boom began to fade. Local Cushing man R.C. Jones, found himself - like so many of the era - benefiting from that which was once considered worthless in the teen years of the 20th century. In oil country - in the boom towns - this meant that schools, libraries, churches, and private residences bloomed to revile any in the 'big cities'. One of the hidden marvels - reviling and exceeling many other well known residences was the Jones Mansion or, "Fairview". Historical records, news accounts, and community surveys describe the house known largely as the Jones Mansion in staggering details. The Girl With the Blues: Ruby Darby, 'Toast of the Oil Field Workers'

The mere hint that she was coming to town, in her elegant decollete gowns, was enough to set men and boys dreaming of flashing eyes, swaying hips, and hot jazz belted out by the top quality talent found in the 'Ruby Darby Show". One of her favorite touring stops was in Drumright (Creek County) and part of the Cushing Oil Field boom. Workers from all over were drawn to her shows and she filled up whatever venue she used. In Spring of 1918 she made her last appearance there prior to "going to War" by entertaining the troops in France. She was described as a " beautiful actress who runs a very popular musical comedy" who, "when she comes out on the stage in one of her decollete evening gowns and starts to sing "Sweet Daddy "[see note below]...well, the writer enthused, "those boys, back from hell in the trenches, will wild, simply wild..."
