The thick black substance so laboriously wrenched from the earth, once thought of as mere nuisance to the business of farming and ranching suddenly, with changing technologies, was found to be useful and an important part of life. Local Cushing man R.C. Jones, found himself - like so many of the era - benefiting from that which was once considered worthless in the teen years of the 20th century. In oil country - in the boom towns - this meant that schools, libraries, churches, and private residences bloomed to revile any in the 'big cities'. One of the hidden marvels - reviling and exceeling many other well known residences was the Jones Mansion or, "Fairview".
Historical records, news accounts, and community surveys describe the house known largely as the Jones Mansion in staggering details. "Constructed by Bill Montgomery the mansion has four floors and is 16,000
Sq Ft in Size." Each floor of massive square feet.
Construction on the Mansion started in 1926 and it was quickly recignized as one of the
Southwest’s most beautiful homes, "The Jones Mansion... was completed in construction and furnishings in 1929. It was
built on a 160-acre plot of land; The interiors woven tapestry gave the
home indescribable dignity. Great arched windows and beautiful twin
fireplaces adorned the living area. They provided the perfect backdrop
for the Carrara marble statuary of Diana, imported from Flavia, and the
Robert Adams and the Louis XV chairs upholstered in Genoese velvet.
Buff, rose and royal blue colors predominated the dining area. Heavy
velvet carpets from London were woven in royal blue with borders that
duplicated the hand-blocked design of the linens and draperies. The
dining furniture was hand carved mahogany and the shell design of the
chair backs was carried in to the architecture over the door. Above the
table hung a beautiful crystal chandelier and, on the walls, rested a
pair of bronze-finished torchiers..."
The estate was sold to the Jesuits in 1963 and remained in their hands into the 1970's when it was acquired by Valley Hope to become a drug and alcohol abuse treatment facility. Valley
Hope of Cushing is located midway between Oklahoma City and Tulsa. This
72-bed facility provides residential treatment
for adults. Housed in a stately mansion on a large acreage overlooking
the city of Cushing, the center offers a rural, relaxed atmosphere
conducive to healing.
Valley Hope - and the Jones Mansion - stand as examples of how the beauty of the past can be repurposed and preserved to benefit the present and future while also treasuring the gifts of the past.
